The principle of the 3Rs in nanomedicine and drug delivery studies

Nanomedicine and nano delivery systems represent key research fields due to increasing employment of materials in the nanoscale range as tools to deliver therapeutic or diagnostic agents to specific sites in a controlled manner. Three-dimensional cell culture models, computational/in silico models, -omics technologies, experimental research with animal species with lower neurological development represent useful tools in the advance of preclinical strategies, aimed to assess the ability of nano-based delivery systems to transport and selectively release drugs inside the cell/tissue target. These strategies, avoiding the use of higher vertebrates, comply with the principle of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement) in scientific research. This workshop will focus on the application of the 3R principle in nanomedicine and drug delivery studies, giving particular attention at the application of new biological assays as well as in vitro 3D cell model and lower organism use.
