At first, applications of electrospinning dedicated to preserve human health resulted in air filtration and personal protection purposes. Subsequently, bioengineering, and biomedical engineering research communities, inspired by the similarity of electrospun nanofibers to fibrous extracellular matrices of natural human tissues, focused their attention to new potential applications in medicine and healthcare. Thus, electrospun nanofibrous products have become excellent devices for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, such as for drug delivery with controlled release, wound dressing, biosensors, diagnostics, and cosmetics. The enormous availability of polymers and composite materials usable in the electrospun process, facilitates the chance of obtaining biocompatible and biologically active nanofibrous devices. The workshop session aims to promote the versatility of this technology and the advances achieved in this regard by CNR research (National and International Actions), encouraged by the birth in Italy of enterprises dedicated both to the development of customized equipment and functional materials for challenging applications in health and biomedicine. | |||||||
